Restoration of a 17th-Century Circular Walled Garden in South Hams
Atkinson Architects are pleased to be progressing through the planning and listed building stages at Alleron House in Loddiswell, located in the heart of the South Hams.
The estate features an utterly exceptional circular walled garden – a rare and historically significant structure dating back to the 17th century. Originally designed as a productive kitchen garden serving the main house, this fully enclosed and remarkably well-preserved space is unique within the South Hams.
Constructed using traditional local materials, the garden’s thick walls are built with load-bearing stone at the base and cob above eye level. These are finished with a dense thatched coping, carefully designed to protect the structure and efficiently shed rainwater away from the walls.
Standing approximately 2.7 metres (9 feet) high, the enclosure strikes a perfect balance offering shelter from wind while still allowing generous natural daylight to reach the planting areas. A historic leat runs through the circular layout, providing a controlled and sustainable water source for irrigation – an early example of intelligent garden design.
This remarkable garden is a true architectural gem, and it is reassuring to see it continue its legacy as a productive vegetable garden, maintained and cared for by dedicated private clients.
