North & South Lodges, Maristow, Devon

Grade II Listed Granite Gatehouses

The original formal entrance gates and lodges at the head of the drive to Maristow House. North Lodge is a Grade II Listed building constructed from solid granite blocks hewn from the local Dartmoor Quarry - Foggintor in the mid 18th century.

We have restored and extended the building which is now a two-bedroom dwelling. The kitchen and bathroom extension at the rear provides modern facilities to the formal lodge-house.

The whole building has been upgraded internally with thermal insulation, better natural ventilation and new fires, wood-burners and boilers suitable for modern family occupancy. A sustainable on-site drainage and water management system has been installed.

The restoration of granite work with thin joints and infill replacements demanded the use of specialist stonemasons to ensure a seamless appearance of old and new. Roofs have been repaired with lead, slate and mineral coverings.
