Drake House, Hope Cove, Devon

Sea Captains’ Villa - Restoration & New Wing Extension

Perched atop Mouthwell Beach in Hope Cove, Drake House is an imposing villa built in the late nineteenth century for an Admiralty Sea Captain.

The whole house has been renovated from a dilapidated state - including improvements to the thermal insulation and environmental qualities on such an exposed coastal spot.

A new, two storey west wing has been added to match the original villa.

Facing the beach, a new contemporary garden room projects forward to provide generous and airy open plan accommodation in contrast to the Victorian cellular rooms of the main house.

A rich palette of materials including copper, gently patinating to verdigris green, terracotta pan tiles and cream lime render were chosen to sit comfortably within the sandy, tidal location.

Extensive landscaping as the private garden sweeps down to Mouthwell Beach also included the reconstruction of the cliff face and stabilising the South West Coast Path.
